A resignation that stunned the entire ski world

"See you soon. In the mountains, in the air, on skis, wherever.” With these words, Meta Hrovat concludes an emotional letter in which she announces the end of her career. A resignation that comes as a complete surprise, and not just because of the timing. The Slovenian, just 24 years old, is one of the best that the international ski panorama has to offer. The two-time junior world champion in slalom climbed to four World Cup podiums in her short career. She came third twice in Kranjska Gora and twice in Lenzerheide. Equipped with an incredibly fast swing, Hrovat was one of the world's elite. But now it's over.

As she announced on social media on Monday, she is ending her career. “I always give everything in life to achieve my goals. Only then do I feel calm, happy and at peace with myself. I have dedicated myself to skiing with all my heart,” writes Hrovat, who says that she has now reached a point in her life “where I am no longer willing to dedicate myself to the sport to the extent that I want can achieve results.” She “lost the sparkle in her eyes” and the desire that always drove her along the way to become even better.

“The decision I made was certainly one of the hardest in my life, and I am infinitely happy that I am making this decision in a relatively healthy state,” emphasizes Hrovat. She adds that her knee is failing the injury sustained in the previous year she still plagues. “But it’ll be okay.” The Slovenian has no idea what life has in store for her, “but I’m sure I’ll embark on a new adventure.”

This means that the Slovenian ski scene is already suffering the second setback of the young season. The second great hope, Andreja Slokar was seriously injured a few weeks ago. At least cheerful Zan Kranjec's podium finish in Sölden brightened the mood a bit.
