Retirement at the age of 22: A sentimental skiing farewell

It doesn't always have to be just the stars of the scene whose farewell to skiing is sentimental. The resignations of less prominent aces can also get under your skin. Something like that of Melanie Niederdorfer.

The Austrian is 22 years young and ended her career a few weeks ago. "I cry. But I’m not sad,” she writes on social media, where she reflects on her career with numerous pictures. A career that was promising. But the Salzburg native wasn't able to break through to the top, partly because she struggled with bad luck with injuries at a young age. Among other things, she was slowed down by a serious elbow injury. At the start in all disciplines Niederdorfer was mainly involved in the European Cup, the second most important racing series in the Alpine ski circuit. There she competed in 50 races, with a 17th place in the parallel event at Kronplatz being her best result. She also took part in the Junior World Championships in 2020 and achieved 12th place in the combination. Remarkable: Niederdorfer competed in all classic disciplines, i.e. downhill, super-G, giant slalom and slalom.

Niederdorfer has stopped.

“It's time to say goodbye - to great lessons, incredible friendships and lots of fun. Thanks to everyone who made this brilliant time possible for me,” writes the Austrian and adds: “I will miss you.” Niederdorfer had already lost squad status at the ÖSV in 2020 and fought his way through on his own from then on.
