A ski calendar full of question marks and discussion material

As has already been leaked in the last few weeks, the FIS wants to rely more on the not uncontroversial parallel format in the future. Therefore, with a view to the new season, other disciplines have to be scaled back. The main sufferer: The Super-G. For men, there are only 6 races on the program next winter in this discipline, which is popular with athletes (last year there were 8), but there are 4 parallel races (last year 2). For women there are 5 Super-Gs (last year there were 7) and at the same time 3 parallel competitions. This is causing a lot of discussion in some places. For men, a total of 42 races are planned - 10 downhills, 6 super-G, 9 giant slaloms, 10 slaloms, 3 combinations and 4 parallel races. The women, on the other hand, have 37 races ahead of them (8 downhills, 5 super-G, 9 slaloms, 9 giant slaloms, 3 combinations and 3 parallel races). Corona is becoming a great unknown A new feature is the stage in Lech Zürs, Austria, where a weekend with exclusively parallel races will take place in mid-November. Otherwise, nothing fundamental has changed in the calendar. However, a big question mark still remains: the corona pandemic is becoming a big unknown. The FIS's plan A is to carry out the normal racing calendar. “It is crucial that all athletes of all nations can move to and from the competition and training venues,” said race director Markus Waldner recently Dolomites -Interview. Travel restrictions and quarantine periods must therefore be eliminated. Decision at the end of September Plan B would be for the World Cup to take place in blocks - for example one block each for Val Gardena and Alta Badia, Adelboden and Wengen, Kitzbühel and Schladming. A reduction in the disciplines to downhill, super-G, slalom and giant slalom cannot be ruled out - as is a later start to the season. Which model will ultimately be used will be decided at the end of September. So it's quite possible that the current ski calendar will be thrown out.
