A day with Dominik Paris & Co. at the ski training camp

Train for two or three hours and lie idle for the rest of the day? One thing first: This is not what Paris, Christof Innerhofer & Co.'s daily routine looks like - on the contrary. While most of us turn over in bed, the downhill specialists are already on their way. Luis Kuppelwieser, the physiotherapist for the World Cup speed group, has S+ described the daily routine at the training camp in Saas Fee. 5.00:XNUMX a.m. | The day starts early “In Saas Fee we get up pretty early and then we have breakfast. The glaciers in Switzerland are high and because it is a car-free zone, it takes us a long time to get there. This can be done either on foot or by bike. Some athletes also have electric scooters. At 6 a.m. we take the first train. The speed group is always a little earlier than the technicians. To train downhill or super-G, we need the time in the morning. So we come back to the hotel a little earlier. 7.30am | The training begins “When we get to the top, the athletes start warming up and running in. Sometimes a driver needs specific exercises, or some tape. This is my task. Not much more is possible on the glacier. If the athletes don't need anything, I help the trainers with preparing the slopes and keeping time. Training starts at 8:11. Each supervisor has a fixed position on the slopes. It's always the same one he takes in World Cup races. This is how we try to simulate the races. We film everything and give feedback over the radio. The athletes do four to six runs. It takes about half an hour per round, including the lift ride. At XNUMX a.m. we pack up and head back, which again takes quite a bit of time.” Personal care, such as massage or stabilization sessions, are just as important for Paris & Co. as “normal” ski training.

12.30 p.m. | Lunch at the hotel “In Saas Fee we didn’t have our own chef; we ate together in the hotel. Unlike other sports, skiers don't have a fixed meal plan. Every athlete decides for themselves how much and what they eat. After lunch the athletes take a break, at least most of them do.” 14.00 p.m. | Afternoon care for top athletes “The afternoon is basically free and each athlete decides for themselves what they need. Some people, for example Mattia Casse, go to the weight room, others go cycling or hiking. Innerhofer enjoys cycling. At Domme Paris the focus is on coordination and core stabilization. We are now close to the start of the season and the athletes should already be at a good physical level. We often play soccer or spikeball. These are things that are fun and at the same time good training because they involve coordination and speed.” Spikeball is popular among athletes and is also a good workout.

“The video analysis is scheduled for sometime in the afternoon. Each athlete decides for themselves when they want to do this. The trainers are always available. I'm also always there if anyone needs anything. I massage and treat the athletes and work preventatively with training therapy so that they are fit and safe on the road. If someone has a pain, they can counteract it with targeted exercises. It is particularly important to me that we decide together with each individual athlete when and how much they will train. I see this as one of my most important tasks. I maintain close contact with the athletes and always work with them, regardless of whether they are injured or healthy. Sometimes you have to be able to skip a training session.”
