A surprise winner on the Saslong – Paris is also strong

It wasn't Ryan Cochran-Siegle, but his teammate Bryce Bennett who won the descent on the Saslong. The 29-year-old has never been on the podium in the World Cup before, but always achieved his best results in Val Gardena (fourth place twice). Bennett was in a class of his own on Saturday, especially in the Ciaslat meadow, and secured the first US victory in Val Gardena since 4 - when Steven Nyman triumphed.

In general, nobody would have expected such a constellation on the podium: the Austrian Otmar Striedinger and the Swiss Niels Hintermann took second and third place. Hintermann – like Bennett – had never stood on a downhill piste before. Paris narrowly misses the podium Dominik Paris also showed a strong performance. The Ultner was still 40 hundredths of a second ahead of Bennett in the middle section. However, Paris lost a lot of time in the Ciaslat meadow and missed the podium by 8 hundredths of a second. But he should be somewhat satisfied with fourth place, especially since the Saslong is known not to be one of his favorite routes.

As the second best Azzurro, Mattia Casse ended up in 7th place. The second South Tyrolean, Christof Innerhofer, showed a solid ride and took 17th place. Top favorite and Super-G winner Aleksander Aamodt Kilde was once again lightning fast. But when entering the Ciaslat he made a mistake and was eliminated. This means that the downhill victory in Val Gardena will not go to Norway for the first time since 2016.

The Ski World Cup now continues in South Tyrol. We continue with the two giant slaloms in Alta Badia. The first round will take place on both Sunday and Monday from 1 a.m., with the final starting at 10:13.30 p.m.
