A “green” World Ski Championships in Val Gardena: That’s what the organizers are planning

Val Gardena wants to organize resource-saving title fights in seven and a half years and wants to use existing slopes and primarily existing infrastructure ( Here we reported on the candidacy ). A dossier was recently handed over to the Italian winter sports association FISI, whose board will choose between Val Gardena and the second candidate Sestriere on September 9th. The winner of this preliminary election at the national level can then submit their official candidacy to the international ski association FIS. Skiing has a long tradition in Val Gardena. It goes back to the beginning of the 20th century, when the first ski tourists came to the Dolomite Valley. But Val Gardena has also been a fixture on the international calendar in terms of sport since the 1960s. Year after year, the Saslong is the venue for two races in the fast disciplines, which will take place for the 17th time on December 18th and 2021th, 54, making them one of the most renowned events in skiing worldwide. The absolute highlight in the more than 50-year history was the 1970 Ski World Championships - a milestone for Val Gardena, for South Tyrol and, last but not least, Italian winter sports. Second World Cup after 1970? A lot has changed since then - the passion and enthusiasm for top performance in ski racing, which the Val Gardena organizing committee of the Saslong Classic Club has firmly anchored in its mission statement with the slogan "Passion and Performance", is just as great after five decades as it was back then. And that is why it is now very important to the World Cup committee to organize a major event around the legendary Saslong for the second time since 1970. The vision of an Alpine Ski World Championships in Val Gardena is supported by many people and institutions. The political leadership of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano and the three municipalities of Val Gardena stand with great conviction behind the courageous project, which also has absolute supporters in the Val Gardena tourism industry. “But even more important is the great support from large parts of the population in Val Gardena and beyond. “Many people are very enthusiastic about the idea of the Alpine Ski World Championships 2029 and would like to actively participate in an international sports festival of superlatives,” says Rainer Senoner, President of the Saslong Classic Club. And last but not least, a major sustainable event that creates new jobs and stimulates local economic cycles,” said Senoner, who, along with his team, the political decision-makers and, last but not least, the population of Val Gardena, is eagerly awaiting the decision of the Italian winter sports association on Thursday, September 9th waits.
