A sensational world champion in slalom

Shiffrin was still in the lead after the first run. In the final, however, she had no chance against the new surprise world champion, Laurence St-Germain. The Canadian, who had already amazed everyone with the third-fastest running time in the first round, went one better in the second round and even won slalom gold. St-Germain had never been on a World Cup podium.

The 28-year-old caused the biggest surprise at this World Ski Championships on the penultimate day. Her best World Cup placement dates back to December 2019, when she came fifth in the parallel slalom in St. Moritz. She had never been better than sixth in a special slalom. After James Crawford's gold medal in the Super-G, the Canadian ski team is now causing the next sensation.

St-Germain was ahead of Shiffrin by a total of 57 hundredths. The American won her second silver medal in Méribel. She also has giant slalom gold to her name. Lena Dürr took bronze in the slalom on Saturday. It is the German's first World Cup medal. Wendy Holdener, on the other hand, came away empty-handed. The half-time runner-up from Switzerland could have threatened St-Germain in the final, but was eliminated in the lower part of the stretch.

Della Mea strong The best Azzurra was Lara Della Mea, who advanced from 26th to 8th place in the final. The World Ski Championships conclude on Sunday with the men's slalom. There are also two South Tyroleans, Alex Vinatzer and Tobias Kastlunger.
