A hug that makes waves

On the occasion of Gran Galà della neve e del ghiaccio , which was held for the fifth time this year in honor of Italian winter sports enthusiasts, the crème de la crème came to Madonna di Campiglio. From Dorothea Wierer to Federico Pellegrino to Goggia and Brignone. The latter two, like all other athletes, including Nadia Delago, were recognized for their extraordinary achievements during the Olympic season. Rather than the honor itself, however, the focus was on an embrace by the rival ski luminaries. It is well known that Goggia and Brignone have never been best friends. The tense atmosphere over the last decade hasn't done anyone any harm, on the contrary. The Italians pushed each other to achieve top performance and achieved success after success. Last winter, after Goggia competed at the Beijing Olympics just 23 days after her Injury sustained in Cortina won the silver medal, the dispute escalated. The reason? An interview by Brignone's mother, Maria Rosa Quario, which Goggia called “egocentric.” That got the ball rolling. First Goggia replied, then Brignone intervened before Quario rowed back. By this point, however, the dispute had long since dominated events in the Italian newspapers. Peace? The fact that the topic was perhaps cooked hotter than eaten became apparent at the Gran Gala, when Goggia and Brignone presented themselves arm in arm. Goggia later posted this picture on social media, sending a clear signal. There had already been a first rapprochement at the beginning of May, when Brignone was reintegrated into the elite group with Goggia and Marta Bassino after always training in isolation the previous year. We can only hope that the issue has now been cleared up and that the protagonists will once again make good headlines with their sporting activities.
