Elena Fanchini talks about tumor disease: “I was extremely lucky”

“I'm doing well, very well in fact,” explains Fanchini. “I had surgery on May 28th and was home two days later. The operation was long, lasting around six hours, because the tumor was so large. However, I got through it all okay. As soon as I got home, I immediately started running and going to the gym.”

Fanchini is currently training with the national team, but she is still undergoing treatment. “I have had to undergo chemotherapy since July 9th. So far my body has responded well to it, which is why I have always been able to train. In my opinion, being an athlete helped me a lot.” The cause of the tumor is now known: it is a gene that Fanchini inherited from her mother.

“Ending my career was never an issue for me” “Despite this dark chapter in my life, I have to say that I was lucky in misfortune. When I felt bad, the doctors immediately found out that I had a tumor and were able to cure this disease perfectly. So I was extremely lucky. The head also played an important role during this time: thinking that I would go skiing again at some point gave me a lot of strength. That’s why it was never an issue for me to end my career.”

As a result, Fanchini is now full of energy. “I would like to take part in the first speed races in Lake Louise. But I won't let myself go crazy. I have to see how my body reacts to the great stress. So far I have only trained with the giant slaloms, but from the beginning of August I will be working with the speed group.”

Finally, the self-confessed Inter fan also spoke about Cristiano Ronaldo and his move to Juventus: “It's a shame that he didn't come to Inter. But I think the Ronaldo transfer will help Italian football as a whole. But we Interisti always believe in ourselves.”
