Fritz Dopfer was, alongside Felix Neureuther, the best ski racer in Germany for many winters - a year after the German World Cup record winner, he has now also ended his career. “Competitive sports – I say goodbye!” wrote the 32-year-old on Instagram on Friday, recalling “beautiful moments” and “shadow sides” alongside a childhood picture of himself.

The racing driver from SC Garmisch decided to take the step after 13 years in the World Cup because he had no other choice after the consequences of a broken tibia and fibula in autumn 2016. He said it became clear to him “that my body no longer allows me to practice the sport to the fullest extent.” The really big victory was denied him This had been evident for a long time - instead of fighting for top places, Dopfer mostly fought for a place in the top 30 and was only rarely successful. From 2011 to 2016 he collected a total of nine World Cup podiums and celebrated his greatest success in slalom in 2015 as vice world champion in Vail/Beaver Creek. He won bronze with the team at the World Championships in Schladming in 2013. Only one victory was denied him: in the slalom race in Adelboden in 2015, for example, he was only two hundredths of a second shy of reaching the top spot on the podium.

Alpin boss Wolfgang Maier said: “Even if Fritz was not granted the big victory in his career, he has shaped the technical team over many years with his successes and his consistency. He was a mainstay of the team before he was set back by a serious injury. Fritz never allowed himself to be discouraged and fought his way back again.”
