European Cup: The slalom starts in Obereggen

Obereggen could be a little more special this year than it already is every year. There is only one World Cup slalom on the calendar before Obereggen, namely the one in Val d'Isere three days earlier. Obereggen is even the opening slalom race in the European Cup. In an Olympic winter like this one, the example of Giuliano Razzoli must be mentioned, who was crowned Olympic champion a few weeks after his Obereggen triumph in 2009. Interestingly, the reigning overall World Cup winner Alexis Pinturault never saw the finish in three Obereggen starts (2008, 2009 and 2010). On the other hand, Marcel Hirscher, the most successful ski racer of all time with eight overall World Cup victories in a row, seven world championship titles and two Olympic victories, ended up in third place in Obereggen in 2007 as an 18-year-old.
