The European Cup Slalom in Obereggen is entering the next round

The Eggental ski resort is expecting a large part of the slalom world elite again on Wednesday, December 18th, even though it is “only” a European Cup race - but a special European Cup race.

The oldest European Cup race is always well attended due to its favorable timing at the start of the season. Riding onto the victory podium in Obereggen is prestigious because since the first edition in 1983, exceptional talents such as the eight-time World Cup triumph Marcel Hirscher, the reigning Olympic slalom champion Andre Myhrer, who is “Mister Obereggen” with four triumphs, and many other Olympic champions have stood there , world champion and world cup winner. The Obereggen third in 2017, Clement Noel, was number 2 in the slalom last World Cup winter behind the “extraterrestrial” Marcel Hirscher.

For the slalom specialists in particular, there are a long three weeks between the World Cup slalom in Val d'Isere (December 15th) and Zagreb (January 5th). Val d'Isere is only the second World Cup slalom of the season after Levi (November 24th). Obereggen can therefore expect a field of participants worthy of the World Cup this year. The defending champion is Rodes It has always been that way in recent years, with big names not only standing on the victory podium in Obereggen, but also failing. For example, the two most frequently mentioned candidates for Hirscher's successor in the World Cup: Alexis Pinturault never saw the finish in three Obereggen attempts (2008, 2009, 2010), and for Henrik Kristoffersen, eleventh place in 2012 was the highest of emotions.

Obereggen experienced Croatian festivals last year: Istok Rodes succeeded his compatriot Matej Vidovic as Obereggen winner. In addition to Rodes, the Croatians also placed Elias Kolega (3rd) and defending champion Matej Vidovic (5th) in the top 5. Giuliano Razzoli came second, but local heroes Alex Vinatzer and Fabian Bacher were unlucky. Both were in the top 10 after the first run and were eliminated in the second run after a superior intermediate best time.
