European Cup week in Reinswald starts in just under a month

So you can confidently say that Reinswald has long since achieved classic status in the year before his first milestone birthday. The Plankenhorn piste, around 3600 meters long and with an altitude difference of 815 meters, has roughly the same values as the Saslong in Val Gardena and is certainly one of the longest routes in the European Cup. It may not be as technically demanding as other slopes, but it still demands everything from the young racers. And: Because of the many sliding pieces, the speed aces have to drive very intelligently and cannot afford to make any mistakes in order to carry as much momentum as possible to the long target shot.

The program for the Sarn European Cup week has proven itself in recent years and we are sticking to it this year too. The departure will take place on Wednesday, January 30th. Thursday, January 31st is all about the super combination. And the most important winter sports event in the Sarntal traditionally ends with the Super-G on Friday, which this year falls on February 1st.

European Cup in Sarntal since 2005 The beginnings of the Reinswalder European Cup history go back to 2005. At that time, races for women were still organized in the Sarnen ski area. And the following year the female European Cup entourage also stopped in Sarntal. From 2007 onwards, it was the men who hunted for the best time on the Plankenhorn piste.

With every year new stories are added that make up the Reinswald myth. In 2012, for the first time, an athlete made it onto the podium in all three races: Frederic Berthold, the son of Austrian head coach Matthias Berthold, won the super combined, came second in the downhill and came third in the super-G . The King of Reinswald is still the Frenchman Johan Clarey. He got the hang of it in the men's European Cup premiere in 2007 and won all three competitions. And with a relatively large lead, even though the races in the Sarnen ski area have always been decided by very short distances.

And that brings us to the next story. Because in 2008 the most exciting Super-G of all time took place in Reinswald. Winner Christopher Beckmann from the USA and the first 47 racers behind him were separated by just a single second. Olympic champions and world champions have also been on the podium in Reinswald. Carlo Janka from Switzerland, Olympic champion in Vancouver (giant slalom) and overall World Cup winner in the 2009/10 season, came second in the super combined in 2007. Patrick Staudacher, Super-G champion in Are 2007, triumphed in the downhill in 2009. But winners of World Cup races in Sarntal were also able to look forward to big prize money and heavy, hand-made medals, such as the Austrian Georg Streitberger.

Every year the Reinswalder European Cup history is expanded to include an exciting chapter. It will already be interesting to see what stories will be told from the 2013 races.
