Federica Brignone: “Childhood dream fulfilled”

For many ski aces, the overall World Cup is the biggest thing there is to win. It recognizes the best, most consistent and most versatile athlete of the entire winter. These attributes apply to Brignone this year, although the 29-year-old from La Salle in the Aosta Valley benefited significantly from Mikaela Shiffrin's absence. But even the great superstar paid tribute to her opponent and said that she “thoroughly deserved” to win the overall World Cup. Surprised by the trainers In order to prepare well for the final showdown, Brignone and teammate Marta Bassino traveled to Åre a week earlier so as not to take any risks in times of the coronavirus. There was a lot of training in last year's World Cup venue before the trainers in charge surprised them while they were having a snack with Bassino on Wednesday and announced the good news. “For a moment I thought it was just a joke,” reveals the Aostan native. “Then I understood that it was actually like that. I've been overwhelmed by emotions and can hardly realize it yet." One or two tears of joy are said to have rolled down, after all, a “childhood dream has come true”.

Although the crystal ball had not yet been presented to Brignone - or perhaps because of that - there was a lively celebration afterwards in the Italian women's quarters. And rightly so, because no lady from the boot state had ever achieved such a feat. “I don’t know when or where the ball will be presented,” says Brignone, who mourns the fact that the prize was not distributed: “I wanted to hold the ball in my hand, hold it up and share the moment on the podium with the entire team .”

Despite the great success, the daughter of the former World Cup winner Maria Rosa Quario is looking forward. “Due to the fantastic end to the season, I would like to start training again to confirm my performances, knowing that it will not be easy to repeat such a season,” concluded Brignone.

Federica Brignone's long career has reached its (temporary) peak. From Wednesday, the spirited Italian can call herself the overall World Cup winner. She couldn't realize it at first, but she was overjoyed and a little touched.
