Questions and answers about the new World Cup season

What's up? The two opening races of the Alpine World Cup season will take place next weekend in Sölden, Austria. Women (Saturday) and men (Sunday, 10.00 a.m./13.00 p.m.) each compete in a giant slalom. This is followed by 78 further individual competitions (women 38/men 40) as well as the World Championships in Are, Sweden (February 3rd to 17th, 2019) with a total of eleven competitions. What are the stars doing? Lindsey Vonn (USA) has unsurprisingly announced that the coming season will be her last - regardless of whether she still reaches the record of the legendary Swede Ingemar Stenmark (86 victories in the World Cup) (Vonn has 82). Record overall World Cup winner Marcel Hirscher (Austria/seven titles in a row) has just become a father and, at least his eternal competitor Felix Neureuther claims, “will now be even faster”. Who will win the overall World Cup? For women, Mikaela Shiffrin (USA). She won the “big ball” twice in a row and there is no serious competition for her. The same applies to Hirscher among men. From a South Tyrolean perspective, there are hardly any serious contenders for the overall World Cup. When does the World Cup stop in South Tyrol? In mid-December there are the traditional South Tyrol races in Val Gardena and Alta Badia. On the Saslong there is a Super-G and a downhill on the program on December 14th and 15th. On Sunday, December 16th, the giant slalom will take place in Alta Badia. There will also be a parallel night giant slalom in Alta Badia on Monday (December 17th). Not to be forgotten, of course, is the women's giant slalom at Kronplatz, which will take place on January 15, 2019. And otherwise? The 2019 World Cup in Are could be the last major event for some athletes like Neureuther and Viktoria Rebensburg (both Germany). Possibly also for Hirscher or Aksel Lund Svindal (Norway). For Vonn, it's definitely over at the end of the season.
