Mrs. Holle goes on strike: Killington isn't ready either

After deleted Apply in Lech/Zürs and at Matterhorn The frowning for the FIS officials doesn't stop. Because Father Frost has let all winter sports fans down so far. On the slopes of many winter sports resorts there are only green meadows instead of fresh snow. This is not just a European problem, as in Killington in the USA the skis are still forced to stay in the basement.

On November 26th and 27th, Mikaela Shiffrin and Co. are scheduled to race for slalom and giant slalom points in North America, but the current situation at the “Killington Ski Resort” in the US state of Vermont raises doubts after the cancellations of the last few weeks. The hope for cold temperatures and lots of fresh snow begins more than two weeks before the dates.

Killington has attempted to begin snowmaking in mid-October, but warm temperatures at that time — and a forecast trend of even higher temperatures in the coming days — are cause for concern. A new attempt was made yesterday, Tuesday - so there is still hope.

It takes the resort's snowmaking team between 100 and 150 hours to produce the amount of snow needed for the races - that's about six days of snowmaking. FIS officials are expected to travel to Killington by November 16 to check conditions there.

“We are not 100 percent ready at the moment. So the plan is: If it's cold enough, we can make snow. And the colder it is, the more water we can freeze into snow and the faster we can produce snow,” said Kristel Killary, ski area press officer.

But Killington is still a bit in the distance. Before that, the women will focus on the two slaloms in Levi on November 19th and 20th, while the men will be at the start (downhill) in Lake Louise on November 25th.
