Frustration among the Azzurre: “Ski racing can be cruel”

Seven Super-Gs were held in the women's World Cup this year, and the winner came from Italy no less than six times. Federica Brignone won three races (including one at the same time as the Austrian Cornelia Hütter), Sofia Goggia two, Elena Curtoni one. It goes without saying that Brignone and Curtoni were considered hot favorites for the Olympic race (Goggia is known to be out injured). But in the end the two Azzurres had to settle for 7th and 10th place. The Swiss Lara Gut-Behrami won gold , who was the only athlete in the World Cup who was able to win a Super-G alongside the three Italians.

“Only one thing counts in these races: a medal,” says Elena Curtoni. “I gave it my all, but it didn't work out the way I wanted. I tried, but ski racing can be brutal, especially this one. The slope is even easier than expected. I attacked right at the start, but lost time in the middle section – exactly where Lara Gut-Behrami made the difference.”

She was clearly disappointed, “because it wasn’t the start of the games that I expected. But whatever, this race doesn't take away what I've achieved so far. Tomorrow is a new chance with the first downhill training. “I have to try to forget about it as quickly as possible,” said Curtoni, who achieved a total of three podium places in the Super-G this year. Brignone is at a loss Federica Brignone, on the other hand, no longer understood the world after her performance. “If I could start again now, I wouldn't know what I would do differently. I wasn't nervous, I didn't brake in the corners, I hit the jumps straight away - but that wasn't enough. Maybe I could have caught the corner better in the final part. But I did what I had in mind,” said a perplexed Aostan woman, who analyzed: “These conditions are not the best for me. On an easy slope with an easy course, without any difficulties, all the athletes were fast.”

The Azzurre have a chance to make amends on Tuesday: that's when the Olympic downhill starts.
