For Matthias Mayer it was a “very special trip”

Matthias Mayer (AUT), fastest in training: “I hope that I have made peace with Saslong. It was a special trip for me. Even though it was just a training session, it was good for me to finish first. The piste is in excellent condition, as is usual in Val Gardena.”

Carlo Janka (SUI), second place: “The Saslong is excellently prepared, as always here in Val Gardena. Some of the jumps are still a bit flat, but that can perhaps be corrected a bit. Overall I feel good. My back is still hurting a bit, but at the moment I’m not dissatisfied and it can continue like this.”

Peter Fill (ITA/Kastelruth), third place: “It’s always nice to ski on the home slopes. I had a good feeling again today, even though the ride was difficult because of the many waves. Overall I had a good time and I'm looking forward to the weekend. Until now, it's never really dawned on me here. Only in the last few years have I found my way around here better and am now able to travel well on flat passages. I want to improve on fourth place from last year.”

Steven Nyman (USA), fourth place: “I feel very comfortable on this slope because it reminds me of my childhood years on skis when we trained with lots of jumps and special movements. To be fast here you have to trust the terrain and be ready to throw yourself in that direction. Those who do this can gain a lot of time compared to runners who are hesitant. The piste is once again perfectly prepared, the snow conditions are exceptionally good this year and it is great fun to ski down the Saslong. Sometimes I have a good feeling with the slope, but sometimes it throws me off. That’s why I was very successful here, but I also fell.”

Christoph Innerhofer (ITA/Gais), fifth place: “I am happy with my run. I got off to a good start at the top and I didn't want to take any risks in the difficult sections because you can never estimate in the first training how far the jumps and hills will go. There are some changes in course setting that I support. The result surprises me very much because I was never among the best here. I’m happy and the result shows me that I’m ready for the race.”

For Matthias Mayer it was a “very special trip”

That's what the five fastest in training said after the first test run at this year's Saslong. Matthias Mayer in particular was relieved after he suffered a vertebral fracture in a fall over the third camel hump in 2015, which led to an early end to the season.
