Garmisch Slalom: The sensational man's nerves fail

Many a ski fan may have rubbed their eyes in amazement after the first round. At the top there was none of the top favorites, none of the runners with a small chance, but a blatant outsider: The Swiss Tanguy Nef made a magical run with the high start number 25 and left everyone behind – including Henrik Kristoffersen, who was actually happy about being in the lead at half-time, but now had to make do with second place.

But experience made the difference in the decision: Kristoffersen used all of his routine, drove aggressively but also cleanly at the same time and thus took the lead. So Nef was the only one still at the top and initially did a good job, keeping up easily and hardly losing any time - but then he caught up in the middle section. The dream of the first podium place, of the first victory, was shattered.

7 races, 7 different winners Henrik Kristoffersen was able to celebrate his first triumph of the season in the slalom. Curious: In a total of seven slalom races this winter, there was a different winner for the seventh time. The Swiss Loic Meillard came in second, while Manuel Feller was able to console himself with third place after his disappointment at the Olympics. In the discipline standings, Kristoffersen is now only one point behind leader Lucas Braathen, who was eliminated on Saturday.

In addition to the three top people, two other athletes caused a stir in the decision. On the one hand, the Spaniard Joaquim Salarich, who was able to qualify for the second run with start number 50 and finished the race in sensational 8th place - the best World Cup result in the exotic skier's career. Great Vinatzer reaction On the other hand, Alex Vinatzer showed a strong reaction. In the first run he was dropped back to 23rd place after numerous mistakes, but in the final race the man from Val Gardena turned on the turbo and gained a total of 16 places. In the end, thanks to the second-best running time of the second round, he finished in 7th position.

For the other South Tyroleans, however, there was nothing to gain. Simon Maurberger (Ahrntal) was eliminated in the first run, Tobias Kastlunger (St. Vigil in Enneberg) crossed the finish line more than four seconds behind and missed qualifying for the decision. Manfred Mölgg (St. Vigil in Enneberg) was unable to compete due to a corona infection.

Another slalom in Garmisch is on the program on Sunday.
