The challenging Maier piste, which is up to 55 percent steep, has been in perfect condition for weeks, but the capricious weather in the days immediately before the race means a lot of extra work for the organizers to guarantee the top piste that Obereggen is known for among athletes. Obereggen also has to defend the reputation of being a venue with a race guarantee - since the first edition in 1983, the race has only been canceled twice due to weather conditions, the last time being 17 years ago (2000).

Who registered for Obereggen this time? The final start list for the European Cup slalom will only be determined on Tuesday evening after the team captains' meeting. But the provisional entry list promises a race at the highest level. It also contains the name of Stefano Gross, who came sixth in the World Cup slalom in Val d'Isere on Sunday and was on the victory podium in Obereggen in 2012 and 2014 - although Gross's participation is not XNUMX% fixed, in contrast to that of Giuliano Razzoli , who will surely come to Obereggen.

The path to victory leads through the Swiss. Reto Schmidiger is the reigning European Slalom Cup winner, came a good tenth at the World Cup Slalom in Levi in November and came second and sixth at the only two European Cup Slaloms this season in Fjatervaalen, Sweden. Ramon Zenhaeusern won the first slalom in Fjatervaalen, while Marc Rochat won the second slalom. Obereggen defending champion Loic Meillard is not registered this time.
