Three US girls say goodbye to the big ski stage

Laurenne Ross, Resi Stiegler and Alice McKennis Duran announced their departure from the World Cup circuit. Together, the three athletes have made over 400 World Cup starts in their careers. Slalom specialist Resi Stiegler (35) makes it clear on social media that this step was not an easy decision: “To be able to drive at this level all these years – that is a gift. This is indescribable. I love it very much and am grateful for all of it.”

Although it wasn't enough for Stiegler to win a World Cup in her career, the American still looks back on her performances with pride. In addition to a podium finish in Ofterschwang in 2012, she qualified for three Olympic Games, including the Games in Turin in 2006. In the US women's slalom team, Stiegler marked the transition between the six-time World Cup winner Kristina Koznick and the rise of high-flyer Mikaela Shiffrin. Always got back up after setbacks For Laurenne Ross, her career was a constant ups and downs. The 32-year-old speed rider was often slowed down by serious injuries, but was always able to fight her way back. Saying goodbye is also difficult for Ross. “There is no other place where I will find such a wonderful environment, I will miss this feeling very much,” she writes on social media.

Skiing has been the biggest part of her life so far, but now she is facing a new challenge. Her future would feel like a race whose course she had not yet visited. Alice McKennis Duran (31) hit the headlines last December when she had a fatal fall on the Val d'Isere descent and injured her right ankle. This new setback ultimately led to her decision to end her career. She had to undergo surgery in nine of her twelve World Cup seasons, and an injury meant an early end to the season five times.

Particularly noteworthy is her World Cup victory in 2013 in St. Anton, Austria, as well as her further podium finish in Are 2018. She will especially miss the intensity and hard work of professional sports, she explains on social media. Above all, she highlights the positive experiences and special encounters throughout her career. But she also doesn't want to miss the injury-related setbacks afterwards. Such fateful moments in particular always helped her to work on herself and develop further. “Off to the next chapter,” the American finally heralds the new phase of her life.
