Goggia and the tricky Dubai trip: “That wasn’t necessary”

The weekend in Cortina d'Ampezzo was turbulent for Sofia Goggia. On Friday she won the downhill, on Saturday she fell, and on Sunday she didn't start for safety reasons - and got on the plane instead. Shortly before the World Championships, the currently best downhill skier in the world wants to recharge her batteries again, so she left the frosty Alps behind and headed towards Dubai, where the temperatures are much more pleasant these days, around 20 degrees.

Goggia will stay in the Persian Gulf until Saturday and then start snow training again. Now you could say: A skier who won four of six runs this year and came second again can take all the freedom in the world. Because success seems to prove her right. And yet this week-long holiday trip in the middle of the season (and shortly before the big World Cup highlight) is causing discussions. “Holiday in the warm? That wouldn't have been necessary. But if she wants it that way,” said Italy’s women’s head coach Gianluca Rulfi Sports Gazette.

His words are clear, even if he tries to immediately take the wind out of the sails of a polemic with an anecdote. “Christof Innerhofer was also sent on vacation to the Red Sea before the 2010 Olympic Games. But only because he was a bit 'burnt out' and we suggested he spend some time with his girlfriend.”

Things are different with Goggia, says Rulfi, because everything is fine with her. “But Goggia likes things like that. Sometimes she prefers to do the strangest things. Maybe that will be a motivation for the races,” says the head coach. It will be seen by February 11th at the latest whether Goggia has successfully charged its batteries during its short vacation. Then the women's downhill at the World Ski Championships is coming up.
