Goggia, Shiffrin and Lie celebrate the Kvitfjell comeback

Kajsa Vickhoff Lie has been on the World Cup podium twice in her skiing career. Now the Norwegian has achieved her first victory in Kvitfjell. In the descent on Saturday, Lie was at the top ahead of Sofia Goggia (2nd/ITA) and Corinne Suter (3rd/SUI). There was great celebration not only from Lie, but also from Goggia. The Italian has already bagged her fourth downhill crystal ball (after 2018, 2021 and 2022) ahead of schedule. Mikaela Shiffrin achieved the same feat in the overall World Cup.

Lie started the race early (start number 3) and caught the ideal line from top to bottom. In the meantime she was one second ahead. As a result, the favorites bit their teeth on the Norwegian's time. When downhill dominator Goggia also remained behind by 29 hundredths, 24-year-old Lie began to believe in the big moment – i.e. her first World Cup victory. Goggia, on the other hand, can look forward to a second place and the small crystal ball for the Downhill World Cup. In addition, the Kvitfjell podium is her 2th podium place in the Ski World Cup (with 47 victories). The descent in the far north went less well for Nicol and Nadia Delago. The two sisters from Val Gardena lost a lot of time. For Nicol Delago, her 22th place still has something positive: As a result, the South Tyrolean qualified for the World Cup final in Soldeu (AND) - tied on points with the Austrian Tamara Tippler, who did not start on Saturday. Of the remaining Azzurres, Federica Brignone (26th) made it into the top ten.

Ski superstar Mikaela Shiffrin also won the overall World Cup for the fifth time in her career. A fifth place in the Kvitfjell downhill on Saturday was enough for the American to secure the big crystal ball two weeks before the end of the season. With seven World Cups missing, the 27-year-old can no longer be caught. The two-time Olympic champion has won eleven titles so far this season, five each in the slalom and giant slalom and one in the super-G. “The overall World Cup was my goal for the season. I was so focused on it that I never wanted to bring it up in interviews. “I’m just happy,” said the exceptional athlete.
