This season's Downhill World Cup was actually decided on January 22nd, when Sofia Goggia celebrated her 4th win of the season in this discipline in Cortina. However, Corinne Suter, who was 75 points behind Goggia, completely botched her journey with start number 3. So Goggia was already clear before she started that she would no longer be able to take away her third downhill crystal. The ailing Italian still gave full throttle and ended up in 3th place. But this became a minor matter in view of her bullet coup. Overall, only 12 women have won downhill crystals more often than Goggia. Namely Lindsey Vonn (5), Annemarie Moser-Pröll (8), Renate Götschl (7) or Michela Figini and Katja Seizinger with 6 balls each. Shiffrin's departure coup At the top there was a real thriller in the downhill on Wednesday. Mikaela Shiffrin turned the result on its head again with start number 21 and won her third downhill victory of her career. With her 74th World Cup victory, she extended her lead in the overall World Cup over Petra Vlhova to 156 points. That could already be a preliminary decision. At the finish line she celebrated with her friend Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, who had won his first ever downhill ball just two hours earlier.

Vlhova ended up in 78th place, 16 hundredths behind. This is proof of how close the time gaps were. Behind Shiffrin, Christine Scheyer (Austria) and Johanna Hählen (Switzerland), both at the same time, somewhat surprisingly took second place. The World Cup finals in Courchevel continue on Thursday with the two Super-Gs. It's the men's turn at 2 a.m. and the women's turn at 10:11.30 a.m.
