Gold for Alex Vinatzer in the slalom

Alex Vinatzer set a confident best time in the first run, with Benjamin Ritchie (USA) following in second place, 1,13 seconds behind. In the decisive second run, Vinatzer brought his lead safely across the finish line and was crowned the first South Tyrolean Junior World Champion in the slalom . Benjamin Ritchie (USA) came second ahead of Sam Maes (+2). The Belgian came third in the giant slalom on Monday. With his gold medal, Vinatzer also secured a starting place at the World Cup finals in Andorra in March.

The last South Tyrolean junior alpine world champion was Andy Plank (Vipiteno) in 2009 in the Garmisch downhill, while Dominik Paris from Ultimo was the runner-up world champion at the time. South Tyrol has never won slalom gold at a Junior World Championships; the silver medal went to Alex Vinatzer in 2018, Roman Groebmer (Graun) in 2001 and Oswald Tötsch (Pfitsch) in 1982. The medal haul so far at the Junior World Championships: 17 gold, 20 silver and 17 bronze.

The Junior World Championships in Val di Fassa ends on Wednesday with the women's downhill, the only South Tyrolean at the start is Teresa Runggaldier from Val Gardena.
