Val Gardena is preparing: “Bringing the World Cup home to the fans”

The organizing committee has been working on planning for the Ski World Cup on the legendary Saslong for many weeks. Races that are becoming a great challenge due to the current developments in the wake of the corona pandemic with their countless obstacles. A task that the organizers have a lot of respect for and which they approach with even greater humility. And where they can count on the support of their stakeholders. Starting with the international ski association FIS and the Italian winter sports association FISI, continuing to public administration - be it at the state level, be it in the three municipalities of the Val Gardena - and the local tourism industry, right up to the various long-term partners and the countless employees.

“This cohesion and this lived solidarity are an essential driving force for the Saslong Classic Club. Despite the Corona pandemic, which puts many obstacles in our way, we hope that the 2020 World Cup will be an international event full of passion for skiing. Especially for sport in general and skiing in particular, we in Val Gardena are working towards the last weekend before Christmas, when the winners in the Super-G and the downhill race will be crowned on the Saslong,” says Rainer Senoner, President of the Saslong Classic Club. Strict security protocol The Super-G on Friday, December 18th and the classic downhill one day later will take place under strict safety conditions. These are partly specified by the international ski association FIS and partly by the South Tyrolean state government. The protocol stipulates that everyone involved in the World Cup will be divided into different groups and that these groups will have no personal contact with each other. Before and during the World Cup, all people involved must undergo a corona test and, if the result is positive, leave immediately or isolate themselves. Accreditation for the World Cup will only be issued if the test result is negative.

“If the fans are not allowed to come to the Saslong, then the World Cup will come even more to the fans this year.” Rainer Senoner, President of the Saslong Classic Club Part of the security concept is also holding the classics in front of empty spectator stands. Nevertheless, the renowned skiing event in the 1970 World Cup venue should be an exciting event. “We will do everything we can to provide our fans around the world with the best possible information and exciting stories via our website and social media. When it comes to the production of the TV pictures, we will try to improve them even further in consultation with the production department. If the fans are not allowed to come to the Saslong, then the World Cup will come even more to the fans this year,” promises Senoner.

In the World Cup office in St. Christina, the entry into the crucial phase of preparations is already clearly noticeable. But there is also a lot of work to be done along the three and a half kilometer long racing slope in the next few days so that last year's winners Vincent Kriechmayr & Co. have ideal conditions for the most thrilling ski races possible on the last weekend before Christmas.
