Val Gardena on a World Cup mission in France

Those present at this Sunshine World Cup in Courchevel and Méribel are a delegation from Val Gardena. It is promoting the holding of the title fights in 2029. Led by OC boss Rainer Senoner and the national FISI board member Verena Stuffer, there was non-stop “networking” for the entire 2 weeks. Regardless of whether it was at the FIS working meetings or at reception evenings in the posh World Cup hostels - the people of Val Gardena gave each other a hand everywhere. With only one goal: to leave nothing to chance and to do everything in our power to bring the 2029 World Ski Championships to the Val Gardena. The facts, part 1: The World Ski Championships will take place in Saalbach-Hinterglemm in 2025 and in Crans Montana, Switzerland, in 2027. There are 2029 candidates for the 3 World Cup – in addition to Val Gardena, Soldeu in Andorra and Narvik (Norway). The Scandinavians are considered outsiders, but not Soldeu: For 12 years, the town of 600 people on the French border, 190 km north of Barcelona, has been organizing World Cup races and finals in irregular order. And thanks to perfect organization and great weather safety, we have earned a top reputation. But: Val Gardena is a different house number. But OC boss Rainer Senoner doesn't want to rest on the tried and tested - i.e. the top quality of the Val Gardena Ski World Cup that has existed since 1969. The facts, part 2: Since the end of November 2022, there have been council resolutions from all 3 municipalities in Val Gardena that the application for the 2029 World Ski Championships will be supported. So also St. Ulrich, where of the 18 council members, 15 voted for, 2 voted against and there was one abstention. The state of South Tyrol has long been behind the 2029 World Ski Championships, and discussions are ongoing with the current Italian Ministry of Sports. The plan is: The men's and women's speed races will be held on the Saslong. Slalom and giant slalom are planned on the three-man piste, which leads from Ciampinoi down to the village center of Wolkenstein. Gustav Thöni fell there in the giant slalom at the only World Ski Championships in Val Gardena in 1970. The Cir slope in Langental is planned as a training route. This is how it should be built The plan is to completely rebuild the existing Saslong finish stadium in Ruaccia in order to have a permanent facility for the World Cup for the next 30 years. Because the Saslong orbit will soon be rebuilt, it will be a single, consolidated construction site. A mobile finish stadium is planned in Wolkenstein. Unlike the 2023 World Cup, the men would start with the speed decisions, the women with the technical events - the second week of the World Cup vice versa. It is estimated that the ski family, including the media crowd, will need around 2 beds during the title fights. With around 6000 guest beds in the valley, that wouldn't even be a third. “It is a sporting event and we are responsible for it” Rainer Senoner And as for the so-called, much-vaunted sustainability? Rainer Senoner: “It is a sporting event and we are responsible for it. When it comes to infrastructure, a lot has changed; working groups have been formed, visions are being developed, and projects are coming to the table. There is a huge opportunity for Val Gardena to use this major event to work towards goals that would otherwise probably not be achieved for the next 20 or 30 years.” The final fact, part 3: In May 2024, the FIS Congress in Reykjavík (Iceland) will decide who will be awarded the contract.
