Gufler and Ploner on the podium at the Italian Championships

At the season finale, Michael Gufler and Alexander Ploner made people sit up and take notice again. They showed a great performance in Pozza and kept numerous up-and-coming athletes, but also experienced World Cup starters such as Christof Innerhofer and Florian Eisath, at a distance. In fact, all three medal winners are older than 34.

Although they couldn't stand up to the day's winner Davide Simoncelli from Trentino, they were right behind the Trentino rider in the rankings. Gufler maintained his second place from the first round and ended up 34 hundredths behind. Immediately behind Gufler, Alexander Ploner from St. Vigil made it onto the podium despite a major mistake in the first round. In the end he was 54 hundredths behind Simoncelli.

For Gufler, this is already the sixth medal at the Italian Championships, while Ploner won precious metal for the third time, 13 years after his first podium finish.

Speed specialist Innerhofer took an excellent fifth place behind Luca De Aliprandini (+97 hundredths), while Florian Eisath finished the race in seventh place (+1,17 seconds). With the young Alex Zingerle from Val Badia, a fifth South Tyrolean made it into the top ten. He finished ninth (+1,33 seconds).

Gufler and Ploner on the podium at the Italian Championships

Davide Simoncelli won his third Italian championship title in the giant slalom in Pozza di Fassa on Wednesday afternoon. Behind them are the two South Tyrolean veterans Michael Gufler and Alexander Ploner.
