“I have no words”: Swiss ski ace devastated

“It is difficult to find the right words in this situation,” are Katja Grossmann’s emotional words. The speed specialist, who is part of the B squad of the Swiss national team, has often been plagued by bad luck with injuries in her career and has now suffered another severe setback. The 25-year-old broke all of the metacarpal bones in her right hand while training in Zermatt. The Swiss woman has already undergone an operation in which three plates and 25 screws were inserted.

This is not the first serious injury that Grossmann has suffered. The two-time World Cup starter was not yet 13 years old when she suffered her first serious knee injury, followed by torn ankle ligaments, further knee injuries and back pain. Grossmann showed what a great talent she is when she was fit. In the 2016/17 season, the Swiss triumphed with her first podium finish in the European Cup and fulfilled her medal dream at the Junior World Championships: she won silver in the downhill. Always thrown off course Afterwards, however, Grossmann was thrown off track again. First a broken tibia and fibula, then an extremely complicated hand fracture caused her to miss (too) many races at a young age. Now comes the next bad news with the hand injury.

Grossmann wants to fight back.

“It is difficult to understand and accept the situation. In the last few years I have had to fight through a lot of injuries and will do the same this time," said Grossmann's fighting words, who also added optimistically: "I am sure that luck will be on my side at some point."
