Hagen Patscheider ends the season early - UPDATE

Hagen Patscheider's back has been bothering him for a long time. The man from Val Venosta had already suffered greatly from the persistent pain in Val Gardena and was only able to complete the two test runs on the Saslong with great effort. Now the 24-year-old has to slow down.

"It doesn't make any sense. During downhill training on the Saslong, I almost couldn't go home at the finish because my back hurt so much. It's a shame, because I should have been allowed to take part in the races. I've now applied for injured status, I think "There's nothing else left. My health is also important to me. And if you're not fit, then you can't perform anyway," said Patscheider when asked by SportNews.

Finding the best therapy - surgery may be necessary According to Patscheider, he has a herniated disc between the fourth and fifth vertebrae in his back. "The nerve is pressed and it hurts when I walk, sit, just whenever I move. I already had these problems in the summer. At that time it was said that an operation was not necessary and an alternative therapy would help. But that wasn't the case. I have now taken current pictures and perhaps an intervention is necessary after all," continued Patscheider.

For the people of Vinschgersei the situation is anything but easy. "It's very difficult at the moment. Especially sitting on the sofa at home and having to watch the races on TV - that hurts a lot," the 24-year-old gives an insight into his state of mind.

Hagen Patscheider took part in 31 World Cup races in his career and competed in the European Cup 92 times. In the second most important racing series in the ski circuit, he made it to the podium five times and even won once. His best World Cup result was 23rd place in January 2011 at the Super-G in Kitzbühel. He also finished in the top 30 twice in Wengen and once in Bormio.
