Strong criticism of Lara Gut: “She took everything too lightly”

A second and a third place – those were the only podium places that the Swiss figurehead achieved last season. Since her cruciate ligament tear two years ago, the 2016 overall World Cup winner's results have been very poor, and she was only able to win one of 48 races. Not enough for Lara Gut-Behrami, who enjoys many privileges from the association and, for example, has a private trainer (her father).

Now head race director Rainer Salzgeber commented on the situation in Schweizer Blick and did not skimp on criticism: “The giant slalom is their core discipline. “Last summer and fall, Lara didn’t have the right focus, she took everything too lightly,” he explained. Specifically means: “She tested too little material. Skis, bindings, plates, shoes. Development continues and is complex. But if you don’t try new models at all or say after a run that they’re no good, you’re on the wrong track.”

The result: 14th place in the giant slalom was her best result this year. "Lara thought, 'We'll figure it out.' “That’s the wrong approach,” said Salzgeber. However, Gut-Behrami recently indicated that she had learned from her mistakes. In the summer she will take part in both South American training camps for the Swiss ski aces, and she would also like to intensify her giant slalom training. “I liked that she said that,” explains Salzgeber, who clarifies: “One thing is certain: she is an exceptional athlete.”
