Home victories and serial offenders – the numbers for the World Cup in Val Gardena

The men's downhill run in Val Gardena has been an integral part of the Alpine Ski World Cup since 1969. The Saslong has now become an integral part of the racing calendar and is one of the highlights of the season every season. The route is technically more demanding than many other downhill runs and demands a lot from the athletes, especially in the sliding section.

In addition to the small and large walls, the camel humps are of course also among the key points of the Saslong. The three humps have been defused over the decades because they regularly caused serious falls. The bumps on the Ciaslat meadow offer the last section to master before the steep finish slope.

A Super G was held in Val Gardena for the first time in 1983 and has been a regular part of the World Cup program since 2002. In 1972 there was also the only giant slalom on the Saslong. Serial offenders and the long wait for a home win In the 52 years of the World Cup in Val Gardena, some top riders have stood out. With seven successes (twice downhill, five times Super G), the Norwegian Aksel Lund Svindal holds the record for the most World Cup victories on the Saslong. Kristian Ghedina and Franz Klemm celebrated the most downhill victories, while Svindal triumphed most often in the Super G. Christof Innerhofer celebrated the last podium for a local skier in the 2018 Super G. The last triumph of a local hero was even further back. The South Tyrolean Werner Heel won the Super G in 2008, Kristian Ghedina secured the last downhill victory for an Azzurro in 2001. Pos Name Country Siege 1. Axel Lund Svindal NOR 7 2. Dominik Paris was on the podium twice in Val Gardena. While he took second place in the Super G in 2014, the Ultimo native came third in the downhill in the same year. Christof Innerhofer has a total of one podium (3). Matteo Marsaglia is also one of the remaining active podium finishers in the Azzurri team (Super G 2018). ÖSV in a class of its own With a total of 22 victories, Austria is the most successful ski association on the Saslong. Switzerland (19) and Norway (16) follow behind. The Azzurri, however, were able to celebrate six times on their home track. The Super G starts on Friday at 11.45 a.m. The departure finally follows on Saturday at the same time.
