Hirscher: “I was really afraid”

Last Sunday he watched the start of the World Cup in Sölden on the Coach at home and “without any sadness”. “I was really dreading that day. I thought to myself, what will that be like? It was completely contrary to expectations. I sat there and it felt really good,” said the Salzburg native.

But things are a little different when the snow slowly comes down at home. “So I think to myself, now I’m going to go skiing. But this is the first time I’m thinking about it,” said the eight-time overall World Cup winner, who retired in September. Before the start of the World Cup, the 30-year-old also had other thoughts. “On Saturday, the day before Sölden, I thought to myself: how have I felt all these years, on this shitty day? “I don’t want to trade now,” he said, recalling the time before the start of the season, when no one knows how he compares to the competition.

Watching ski races will not be a must in the future As a TV viewer, he noticed that “even though the ORF is making a lot of effort, we still have a lot of potential to convey what it really feels like.” It is so difficult to convey the steepness of the slope in Sölden. In the past he did a video study of the competition, but as a television consumer he also noticed a few things: “Of course you see a lot, you see crazy tendencies, you see material shifts, you see developments. Exciting."

If he has time, he will definitely continue to watch the ski races on television in the future. “But when the weather is nice, I go on a ski tour or go skiing myself.” Father Ferdinand Hirscher will remain with the Austrian Ski Association with his know-how in the youth sector. “It's his passion, it's part of the whole thing, giving something back, passing something on. The phase is very exciting at the moment. Which talents will they choose? I'm pleased that he's continuing, I think the lucky ones will benefit." He himself has no plans in this direction.
