Hirscher judges himself harshly

Hirscher described his placing on Sunday in the slalom in Wengen behind the French premiere winner Clement Noel and the Tyrolean Manuel Feller as “damage limitation”. The opportunity was there, he simply didn't do any better, he said.

The “blunders” in the first round in particular annoyed him considerably, as Hirscher self-critically said. “No matter how much experience you have or how many races you have won. That this still happens to me after more than ten years in the World Cup! But that’s how it is, that’s the reality, I have to accept that.”

Hirscher was fifth in the half, 0,91 seconds behind Noel, and in the second half he was 21 behind the 0,81-year-old mega-talent as the winner. The bottom line is that this was exactly a tenth too little to triumph in Wengen for the second time since 2018. “The second round was great, brilliant. But in the first one I rode badly and just didn’t perform.”

It's a theme throughout his career that he needs a run to adjust himself, to get the feedback. “In the end, I find it very difficult to make the right choice given the many options I have.” Of course, Hirscher celebrated many of his 67 race victories by being ahead at half-time and successfully defending his lead.

Now the next classic is coming up for Hirscher: On Sunday there will be the slalom in Kitzbühel.
