Hirscher's bullet coup: "I could just tear out trees"

On a salt-prepared slope and in spring temperatures, Norwegian Henrik Kristoffersen was unbeatable on Podkoren on Saturday. Hirscher was fourth at the halfway point of the race and fell two places back in the finale.

Before he thought about something like the overall World Cup, he was annoyed about the race. “I am a racing driver and I do it with passion. “Today was nothing for me, so I’m disappointed,” said the 30-year-old. “I just didn’t drive well. It doesn't matter what the conditions are. You have to be good at everything, you should even be good at water skiing. That's our job, to get it done. We definitely don’t have that today.”

After the race, Hirscher stormed straight out of the stadium and only returned after a few minutes. “Now I need a cold shower and a long walk. In the evening things will obviously be completely different. But right now I could tear up trees. But I think that's exactly what got me to this point. It is precisely this emotion and ambition that have certainly brought me to where I am today. With twenty bullets, it looks like. Nevertheless, it is no less painful today than it was twelve years ago.”

He was convinced that everything would look different by evening at the latest. “The joy will be enormous about a tremendous season that is slowly coming to an end.” This winter he has already won the small crystal for giant slalom and slalom, for the sixth time in total, and now has a total of 20 balls. Only the American Lindsey Vonn has that many at home.

Hirscher's last remaining competitor in the fight for the overall World Cup was the Frenchman Alexis Pinturault. Since he will no longer compete in the downhill in the final week in Soldeu in Andorra, Hirscher's 485 point lead is enough.

The initially wordless exit from the finish area after 6th place in the giant slalom only served to quickly deal with frustration. Marcel Hirscher returned to the ski stadium in Kranjska Gora after a few minutes and accepted congratulations on his just secured 8th overall World Cup victory in a row.
