“I wish I had fainted”

The 22-year-old had a serious fall during the Super-G at the San Pellegrino Pass. Because the binding didn't open, the great skiing talent broke his leg - a brutal sight, as the deformed bone could be seen on TV. The knee was also affected.

This fall occurred at the end of February. Even then, Vickhoff Lie said that she would not wish this pain on her worst enemy. Even today, four months after the fall, everything is far from fine. The 22-year-old is still in pain and cannot walk easily. She is happy that she no longer has to rely on her parents' help in everyday life. But there is no thought of returning to her sport yet. A traumatic experience “It was a traumatic experience with many setbacks. But now there are small upswings again. I have to accept that I am pretty far down and have to be content with small steps that I used to take for granted,” said Vickhoff Lie.

After this fall, the Norwegian had to undergo several operations. “I had a broken leg and a complicated knee injury. The knee is now working very well again, it’s more the leg that I’m struggling with,” said the 2018 Junior World Champion, who is considered one of the top stars for the future. She already hinted at this potential last season with a second place in the World Cup. Difficulties in providing first aid She has – understandably – cruel memories of the fall at the San Pellegrino Pass. "I remember everything. After the fall, it felt like two hours had passed before I got help. I wish I had passed out because it hurt so much. I was clear-headed and tried to give instructions, but it was difficult because the helpers didn't speak the same language," she says. “Olympics 2022? I am confident." Kajsa Vickhoff Lie “I was given painkillers but didn’t feel the effect. As I was being transported to the target area, I grabbed Ragnhild (Mowinckel) and said: 'You have to give me more painkillers. I can't do it anymore.'” He continues: “I remember being in the hospital in Italy and trying to lift my foot. Then I saw that the leg was lying still in the bed while the knee was moving. That’s when I realized it was pretty broken.”

Even now, four months after the fall, Vickhoff Lie is still struggling with the consequences of the fall. Nevertheless, the Norwegian has already set herself high goals, namely taking part in the 2022 Olympic Games. “I am confident about that,” she says, but at the same time emphasizes: “If I come back too soon, it will affect me for the rest of my life track. So I want to take it easy.” Let’s hope that Kajsa Vickhoff Lie finds her way back to her old strength after this terrible fall.
