In the last attempt: Shiffrin reaches for the medal

In the last Alpine individual decision before the descent, everything pointed to a three-way battle for gold: Mikaela Shiffrin, Michelle Gisin and Wendy Woldener were the athletes who had to be beaten. Above all, the American wanted to rehabilitate herself for what she saw as a catastrophic Winter Games and win a medal in her last attempt. At halftime, the chances of this happening are very good, the 26-year-old is in fifth place. The best time was set by Christine Scheyer, whose slalom skills are largely unknown.

In icier snow conditions than in the special downhill run, the Austrian caught an almost unleashed Ester Ledecka, who had made a big mistake in the upper section, by a hundredth of a second. It is questionable whether the two speed specialists can intervene in the medal fight, especially since the slalom aces around Shiffrin are close on their heels. The same applies to Ramona Siebenhofer, who took third place after the descent. Gisin and Holdener tied back As far as the favorites are concerned, Shiffrin has developed the best starting position. The 73-time World Cup winner showed a flawless ride from top to bottom and opened up a gap of just 56 hundredths of a second. Federica Brignone also knew how to impress on the descent and is just behind Shiffrin in eighth place.

The two Swiss trump cards, Gisin (12th) and Holdener (11th), also owed something. In the slalom you can't afford any mistakes. Meanwhile, Nicol Delago failed to gain a small gap and finished ninth. The 26-year-old is probably only taking part in the slalom at 7 a.m. (CET) for training purposes.
