Innerhofer and Brignone are the stars of the Gardenissima

The Gardenissima, which is held every year at the end of the season, has long been a classic and is considered the longest giant slalom in the world. The route is over six kilometers long and leads from the summit of Seceda at 2.518 m through 110 gates to the home straight at Col Raiser.

There will be 650 skiers from 12 nations at the start. Christof Innerhofer is accompanying the trip with great expectations. The South Tyrolean skier, world champion in the Super-G 2011 in Garmisch, two-time medalist in Sotchi 2014 and newly crowned double Italian champion, is expected to set the benchmark for all participants. The Bolzano World Cup rider Riccardo Tonetti, Mattia Casse, Nicolas Raffort, Daniel Hemetsberger, Daniel Danklmeier, Patrick Schweiger and Thomas Mayrpeter. Also at the start is Val Gardena's young slalom hope Alex Vinatzer.

For the women, all eyes are on Federica Brignone, Ricarda Haaser and Verena Stuffer. Not to be underestimated is the newly crowned Italian champion Nicol Delago, as well as her younger sister Nadia and Peter Runggaldier's daughter, Teresa. As now big “Gardenissima” fans, the Argentinian sisters Simari Birkner Belen and Angelica will be at the start again.

But it's not just the big names in the ski circuit that arouse curiosity, other participants such as Andreas Goldberger, the successful ski jumper of the 1990s, will also be at the start of the giant slalom in Val Gardena.

Girardelli, Rocca & Co. at the start of the Legends In addition to top racers and young hopefuls, a group of celebrated skiers from the past will also start: Marc Girardelli, five-time World Cup winner and four-time Olympic champion, Peter Runggaldier, Giorgio Rocca, Paola Magoni, Daniela Zini and Maria Rosa Quario, a former top skier, will compete between the gates of the Gardenissima and today journalist and mother of Federica Brignone.

Jürgen Egle from Vorarlberg is the first forerunner. He is paralyzed after an accident and has won 11 medals on his monoski at the Paralympics and World Championships.

The racing weekend in the Ladin winter sports valley is rounded off on Sunday with the Gardenissima Kids. The competition for young skiers born between 2004 and 2011 is considered the toughest junior ski race in the Alps.

The 22nd edition of the “Südtirol Gardenissima” next Saturday promises to be another prestigious event. The renowned traditional race at the end of the season in Val Gardena is enriched by top-class participants from the World Cup.
