Interview refused: TV trouble in the ski camp

It has been common practice for ski stars for years to take drinking bottles or cans from their own sponsors during TV interviews. Some people discreetly hold the liquid container up to the camera, some people even treat themselves to a strong (and clearly visible) sip. For the athletes, this is a welcome way to showcase the sponsor with good airtime.

ARD and ZDF are now declaring war on this: Since this year, ski stars have not been allowed to take bottles or cans with them during interviews with the two German broadcasters. This causes trouble in the ski warehouse. “This is not surreptitious advertising, this is conscious advertising. As skiers, we only have limited advertising options. It's also written in our contracts that we should do that," explains Thomas Dreßen, for example, who also makes it clear: "The TV broadcasters must be clear that there would be no sport without sponsors."

Kriechmayr refuses to interview the winner Some ski stars with drinks sponsors have therefore announced that they will boycott the interviews with ARD and ZDF. Vincent Kriechmayr carried out the threat on Friday: According to his Victory in the Super-G the Austrian refused to appear on German television. Dominik Paris, who is sponsored by an Austrian shower manufacturer, also has nothing to gain from the ARD and ZDF campaign. “I certainly won’t stick to it,” says the Ultner Courier cited.

And Thomas Dreßen? As a German crowd favorite - and with a drinks manufacturer as a sponsor - he is in a quandary. On Friday he still went to the interview obediently - without a can in his hand, but with a noticeable scarf from his sponsor around his neck.
