Now it's fixed: Last season for Lindsey Vonn

With or without a World Cup record: ski star Lindsey Vonn has announced her retirement after the end of the coming season. The 33-year-old told US broadcaster NBC on Thursday (local time) in New York that she would also quit if she did not break Swedish ski legend Ingemar Stenmark's record for most World Cup victories. Vonn has won 82 World Cup races so far, four fewer than Stenmark. Theoretically, Vonn could set the Stenmark record at the Super-G in St. Moritz on December 8th, and a week later at the downhill in Val d'Isere she could become the sole record winner.

At the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang in February, Vonn emphasized that she wanted to keep driving until she broke the record. Now she explained: “If I reach him, it would be a dream come true. If not, I still had an incredibly successful career. “I’m still the skier with the most wins of all time.”

Vonn added: “Physically I’m at the point where it doesn’t make sense anymore. I want to stay active when I'm older, so I need to think about the future and not just focus on what's happening now."

The 2010 Olympic downhill champion has been struggling for years with the consequences of a knee injury, which also forced her to forego the 2014 Olympics in Sochi. In Pyeongchang, Vonn took bronze in the downhill and then said goodbye to the Olympics with tears.

Her current announcement does not come as a surprise; in September she had already publicly thought about ending her career after the coming winter, but had not yet decided. She is now planning to start in all downhill and super-G races, but no longer in the giant slalom and slalom. Vonn wants to start her season in Lake Louise, Canada, at the beginning of December and will probably say goodbye at the end of March.

Vonn can then imagine business activities in the areas of beauty and clothing. “I honestly don’t know anything about starting a business, but I know what my passions are,” she said.
