Because of the Corona crisis, companies across the globe are expecting major losses. This also applies to the Italian winter sports association FISI, which is forced to take austerity measures. Therefore, the number of teams and their size were significantly reduced. Those who suffer are the ski aces who did not perform as desired last winter. Botched season leads to exclusion One of them is 20-year-old Mattia Cason from Laion, who was part of the European Cup team last winter. Because his first season in the European Cup was neither satisfactory from his point of view nor from that of the association, he did not appear in any squads when the teams were announced in the spring. A decision that Cason had to swallow at first.

The biggest difference compared to a squad athlete is the training options: While Nicol Delago & Co. have been skiing down the mountain on the Stelvio since the end of May, there is great uncertainty for Cason as to whether he will be able to train on snow at all this summer . “It looks like they will open the hotels on the Stelvio at the end of the month,” says Cason. This is the main requirement if the sports groups want to set up their training tents in South Tyrol's highest ski area. “But I don’t lean too far out of the window. Because what would happen if a coronavirus infection was detected in someone?” worries the speed specialist. Although the preparation and the national races are taken care of by the sports group, high costs would be incurred for European Cup or FIS races abroad. In addition, the South Tyrolean is not allowed to be accompanied to the races abroad by the sports group's own trainers and is on his own when traveling.

Nevertheless, Cason believes it is possible to fight his way back into the national team. “However, this is not easy, as you enter the season with a considerable training deficit.” But he will do everything in his power to make this happen.
