Kitzbühel descent: Kilde triumphs, South Tyroleans frustrated

When Dominik Paris swerved at the finish line in Kitzbühel on Friday afternoon, his look was one of disbelief. He had lost a second in his race - which was held on a shortened route due to the wind - to the Austrian Daniel Hemetsberger, who had been leading up to that point. Because a few runners then beat the top times, the Ultner accumulated more than two seconds behind by the end and is ranked 27th in the final ranking. This means that the 32-year-old has his weakest downhill result in Kitzbühel since 31st place in 2014.

There were no major mistakes to be seen during the Paris trip, but you could tell that the strong ski star had difficulty building up his speed throughout the entire performance. A material faux pas? Or was it because of the early start number 5? The fact is that in the end there was only one runner in the top 6, Matthias Mayer (4th place), who had a single-digit number (7). The fresh snow that fell during the night obviously left a lot of traces. Doubly bitter for Paris: After this disappointing race, he has to give up the red jersey of the leader in the downhill ranking and is now 85 points behind the leaders.

For Christof Innerhofer, who was the fastest in the final training, there was also nothing to gain: He started with number 20 and was extremely fast in the upper part, but in the first gliding section the minimal lead turned into a big deficit, which is why he ended up in 17th place. A used day for the South Tyrolean runners. Best Azzurro was Matteo Marsaglia in 12th place. French madness Others provided the big show on Friday - above all the speed high-flyer Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, who also triumphed on the Hahnenkamm after his victory on the Lauberhorn last week. Mikaela Shiffrin's friend also grabbed the red jersey in the downhill ranking. Kilde is in outstanding form and rides with a looseness and a confidence that you cannot currently find in any other runner in the speed range.

But two Frenchmen caused the sensation. At the age of 41, Johan Clarey raced to second place and extended his record: there has never been an older skier on a World Cup podium. The Austrian Matthias Mayer was also happy about his third place and was already giving his first podium interviews - but then a certain Blaise Giezendanner came along: starting the race with starting number 2 (!), the French underdog pushed Mayer out of the top 43. One incredible performance.

We continue in Kitzbühel on Saturday with the slalom (10.15:13.45 a.m. / XNUMX:XNUMX p.m.), before another downhill run on Sunday. Then there is also the chance for compensation for Dominik Paris and Christof Innerhofer.
