Will China's Olympic downhill enter the World Cup?

China officially spent around four billion euros on the Olympic Games. The number of unreported cases is of course significantly higher. The costs of the infrastructure alone that was built away from the newly built complexes amount to tens of billions. So that the facilities do not have to face a bleak future of decay after the three-week Olympic spotlight, they also want to be integrated into everyday sporting life.

Above all, the Olympic downhill run “The Rock” should be the subject of these discussions. Although it caused a lot of excitement among athletes during the Winter Games due to the difficult wind conditions, from a purely sporting perspective the slope had a lot to offer. And that fits perfectly into the concept of the World Ski Association FIS. New markets, new money Since Johan Eliasch took office, the world association has been desperately trying to create a new, shiny image. Projects like: (alleged) climate neutrality and Mega descent on the Matterhorn stand out. And according to rumors, there is now also a departure in China – under floodlights. And there lies probably the biggest problem. In the evening, the winds in the Yanqing region are significantly stronger than at the start times during the Olympic Games. It's hard to think about holding the event under floodlights. Moving the event to times when conditions are quieter also makes little sense. Since the target audience is in Central Europe, the number of viewers would certainly not break any records given the start times in the middle of the night. China is not alone In addition to China, there are two other applicants who want to integrate their expensive ski facilities into the World Cup: Sochi and PyeongChang. This would further delay a possible application from China.

It is therefore unlikely that the Chinese piste will be added any time soon, especially since such an application would first have to be discussed and approved by the FIS. Initially, their focus will probably be on the Matterhorn descent next winter. It remains to be seen whether the chances for “The Rock” will increase afterwards.
