Surprise victory in Saalbach

Zan Kranjec, who is on the podium for only the second time in his career, was still in third place after the first run. In the decision, he made a clean run on the demanding and exhausting slope and in the end also benefited from the failures of the two half-time leaders Manuel Feller and Matts Olsson. Loic Meillard from Switzerland came second (it was his first World Cup podium), and third place went to the Frenchman Mathieu Faivre.

With his surprise success, Kranjec not only celebrated his first career victory but also ensured the first ever World Cup victory by a Slovenian ski men in giant slalom.

The performance of Marcel Hirscher, who had always landed on the podium in the last 18 giant slaloms, was surprising. At his home race in the state of Salzburg, of all places, he had a bad day, miscalculated the material and was otherwise not quite up to speed. In the end, the dominator had to settle for sixth place.

Best “Azzurro” was Luca De Aliprandini. The man from Nonsberg was able to fight his way up from twelfth place to ninth place in the second round. The 28-year-old was able to build on his good form from Sunday, when he finished seventh in Alta Badia. Mölgg close behind the top ten Manfred Mölgg, 13th after the first run, ended up eleventh. The man from Enneberg was particularly impressive in the lower part of the second run. Riccardo Tonetti, 14th after the first run, was eliminated in the final section of the second run.

Hannes Zingerle from Stern and Simon Maurberger from St. Peter im Ahrntal were unable to qualify for the second round. ( SportNews berichtete ).
