Kranjska Gora is bassino country

With low temperatures and icy piste conditions, the starting point before the decision was made was clear: Although Marta Bassino “only” took second place at halftime, she was the big hunted given her great slalom form this year. Mikaela Shiffrin, on the other hand, tried to fight back after the unsatisfactory race on Saturday.

The American did not succeed in this. On the one hand, because Marta Bassino conjured up a fabulous ride on the Slovenian ice in the decision. On the other hand, because half-time leader Shiffrin never found her rhythm and also made a few mistakes. The result? The 24-year-old Italian won her fourth victory in her fifth giant slalom – an impressive result. And if Bassino hadn't been eliminated a few goals before the end in Courchevel, she would probably now have an impeccable record. Michelle Gisin, who was also strong, took second place, repeating Saturday's result. Meta Hrovat, who was on the podium on her local mountain last year, completed the podium.

In contrast to her compatriot, Federica Brignone – like the day before – did not cope well with the conditions: she attacked in the decision and gained a considerable lead, but slipped in front of the steep slope. Last year's overall World Cup winner is struggling with her form - this became apparent throughout the weekend in Kranjska Gora. Petra Vlhova also shook her head dissatisfied at the finish, she came in tenth. There was no South Tyrolean at the start.
