Kristoffersen's triumph in the wildest slalom of the year

Wengen is firmly in Norwegian hands! After Aleksander Aamodt Kilde's double in the Super-G and the downhill, the slalom triumph also went to the “Elchen”. Henrik Kristoffersen was unbeatable in the Bernese Oberland on Sunday and took his second win of the season.

It was a crazy race that took place in Wengen. In the first round, the completely softened piste (it was around five degrees plus) and the unfortunate course setting (very twisty, there was hardly any speed) resulted in extremely long time gaps. Stefan Hadalin qualified for the decision in 30th place, more than five seconds behind. No fewer than 30 of 71 athletes were eliminated in the first run - an indication of how difficult it was. As if that wasn't enough, there was heavy snowfall in the finale, which caused poor visibility. All in all, probably the wildest slalom of the season so far.

In the end it was Henrik Kristoffersen who coped best with these conditions. After the first run in second place, the Norwegian took full risks in the final and set the fastest time. Now only the Swiss Loic Meillard was at the top, but he was unable to maintain his lead from the first round and ended up in second place. Switzerland has been waiting for a slalom victory in Wengen for 2 years. Third place went to the Norwegian Lucas Braathen.

Vinatzer races into the top 10 Alex Vinatzer showed a great race. After the first run in 13th place, the man from Val Gardena threw everything into the balance in his second appearance. Like Vinatzer, he risked everything and narrowly missed out twice, but the plan worked out and in the end “Vinnie” improved by three places to 10th place. “Zach, zach,” he said into the finish camera, underlining how hard this race was. For Vinatzer it was the second top 10 result in a row after he had previously failed to collect points five times in a row. So the trend is pointing steeply upwards.

Simon Maurberger also collected good World Cup points in 20th place. He made up four places in the final. However, Matteo Canins and Tobias Kastlunger were not involved in the decision: the former did not make it into the top 30, the latter was eliminated in the first round.

Kitzbühel Week is now coming up for the men. There will be two downhill runs on Friday and Saturday (each at 11.30 a.m.), and on Sunday the stage belongs to the slalom stars (10.30 a.m. / 13.30 p.m.).

This race was not for the faint of heart – or for weak thighs. The slalom in Wengen demanded everything from the athletes. In the end, Henrik Kristoffersen won, but Alex Vinatzer was also happy.
