Andrea Ballerin made 45 World Cup starts in his career, as well as 132 in the European Cup, where he also triumphed once. But his career was primarily marked by many injuries. “Five operations and other injuries have slowed my career. All in all, I’m happy,” said the giant slalom specialist Race ski magazine . In the past two years, the Trentino native has been unable to compete in practically any races due to injury; most recently, his cruciate ligament tore in his knee in December 2020. A bitter aftertaste remains Despite everything, Ballerin has had an extraordinary career, especially because he was mostly on his own. He only spent two seasons in the national team's World Cup squad, otherwise he mostly had to fend for himself and without support from the association. So a bitter aftertaste remains, as can be seen in his farewell words on social media. “I would like to thank everyone who accompanied me during this wonderful journey. FISI has not given me much warmth over the years, unlike you, who have always given me courage with your messages.” Ballerin wanted to thank one person in particular on his farewell, namely Alexander Prosch. The ski coach from Meransen suggested the Trentino native – who was not part of the national team at the time – for a World Cup race in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where Ballerin raced to 21st place. The 32-year-old achieved his best result in the premier ski class in Saalbach-Hinterglemm in December 2018, when he came 16th. What's next for him? He wants to spend more time with his family and will also be active as a coach for the police sports group in the future.
