Last descent of the winter: Paris rushes past the podium

The tenth and final World Cup downhill in the 2022/23 season was won by Vincent Kriechmayr. The 31-year-old Austrian won the speed final in Soldeu in good conditions and bright sunshine and celebrated his 16th World Cup victory.

The German alpine men provided the surprises of the day: Romed Baumann and Andreas Sander took second and third place. For Baumann it was the first podium finish of the World Cup winter, for Sander the second after his second place in the Super-G in Aspen.

Meanwhile, daily winner Kriechmayr celebrated his fourth downhill victory this winter, after his successes in Val Gardena, Bormio and Kitzbühel. This meant that the ten downhill races were split between two athletes, as the other six races in the speed discipline went to Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, who came sixth on Wednesday. The Norwegian had secured the small crystal ball early.

Dominik Paris was only 14 hundredths behind third place in the rankings. The 33-year-old from Ultimo, who finished in the top 15 in all downhill runs this calendar year but has been waiting for a podium finish in this discipline for over a year, took fifth place. Paris chose a cautious line, but still built up a lot of speed and in the end was only three tenths slower than Kriechmayr. Paris will be on Thursday ( from 11.30 a.m. in SportNews -Ticker ) are once again looking for their first win of the season in the Super-G.

Schieder back in the top ten Florian Schieder made his last appearance of this World Cup winter on Wednesday and once again made it into the top ten with a clean ride. He finished ninth, 46 hundredths behind. For the 27-year-old from Castelrotto, the last race was further confirmation of this outstanding comeback season, in which he not only finished second on the podium in Kitzbühel, but also established himself among the absolute world leaders in the downhill.

In addition to the two South Tyroleans, the third Azzurro, who took part in the Soldeu descent, also made it into the top ten: Mattia Casse took sixth place at the same time as Kilde. The Piedmontese also ends up in the same position in the Downhill World Cup, where Schieder and Paris take tenth and eleventh place.

Wednesday's race in the Pyrenees was also marked by big farewells. Johan Clarey (12th) and Travis Ganong (20th) made the last appearances of their long careers.
