Manfred Mölgg: “I’ll be on the podium this season”

SportNews.bz: Mr. Mölgg, how big is the disappointment that you didn't get a podium finish in Schladming? Manfred Mölgg: I'm not disappointed at all, I'm very happy with fourth place. I know where I left the time, that is very important to me. And it's no use crying over this third place. Fourth place is a good result.

So are you also satisfied with your trip? Yes that's me. I made one or two mistakes that cost me the podium, but I was able to react really well after the mistakes. The most important thing is that I drove the way I wanted to. I turned off my head and just went for it. It should be so. Because I can ski. And that's why I shouldn't worry too much about it. It's like in school: what you can do, you can do. There, it doesn't help if you study for a test at the last moment.

If you look at your slalom results, you'll notice that you're very consistent this year. Why is that? Consistency was one of my goals for the season. Last year I had too many failures and I really wanted to do better this year. We changed a few things, technically, and these changes are paying off. Step by step I get to where I want to go.

And where would you like to go? I want to permanently establish myself at the top of the world. This fourth place in Schladming gives me a lot of encouragement because it proves that I am on the right path.

What is still missing to get back on the podium? Before the race in Schladming, I usually had a great run this season and made a big mistake in the other. Both rounds went well in Schladming.

When will we next see you smiling from the winning photo? (laughs) Of course they want to hear that it will be at the next race. I'm happy that I'm where I am at the moment, namely on the way back to the absolute top in the slalom world. The next slalom will take place at the World Cup. Of course it would be nice if I could get on the podium there. But before that I have to do a giant slalom in Hinterstoder. I also have to be at the front there so that I can win the World Cup in the giant slalom. I can't promise anything, but I know that there will be a podium from me this year.

You mentioned the giant slalom: why isn't things going so smoothly there this year? Before the start of the season I was incredibly fast in training. But I haven't been able to find my rhythm in the races yet. I may have thought too much about this. The same thing applies here as in the slalom, namely that I should just go for it. I hope that this will get better in the next races.

Let's stay in Schladming for a moment, where 50.000 spectators made a pilgrimage. How did you experience the atmosphere? It was huge. I've been competing in Schladming for seven or eight years now and it's always been hell. For me personally, things always go well in the night race, only once was I not in the top 7. When you reach the finish like on Tuesday and the green one lights up, then of course it's just as bad again. Then it can happen that you shout your joy out loud (laughs).

Why are things going so well for Ivica Kostelic at the moment? Ivica is in great shape. We didn't know until yesterday that he is a technically excellent driver. He has started to win a lot of races, so he is brimming with self-confidence and things are getting easier. Plus, he simply makes very few mistakes.

Let's talk briefly about the World Cup. Are you already thinking about Garmisch? Yes, of course. But not like at the last World Championships. I'm in very good shape, but I'm not the favorite. I like this role because everyone knows that I can be fast.

Does the slope suit you? Yes, it is absolutely a slope that suits me and my abilities. It's basically very similar to Schladming, even if the start has been moved up a little. I will now prepare well for the World Cup – and then attack fully. But I don't just think I have a chance in the slalom. I am confident that I will also be part of the team for the giant slalom.
