Manfred Mölgg came second in the giant slalom in Sölden

Ligety, second after the first run, showed a top performance in the second run and won in 1:17,50 minutes. He relegated South Tyrolean Manfred Mölgg to second place. The 30-year-old from Val Badia, whose best result was in Sölden in 2007 (6th place), was 2,75 seconds behind in the end. For Mölgg, the podium finish is the best result in giant slalom for a long time. An Austrian came third, namely Marcel Hirscher. He was 3,12 seconds behind Ligety.

“Things have never actually gone so well for me in Sölden, which is why second place comes as a surprise to me today. I knew I was in a good mood, but I didn't believe it would go so well. You couldn't see anything and I made a few mistakes on the steep slope. So I have to compliment Ted Ligety. He drove great. I have never returned home from Sölden satisfied, but second place today gives me a lot of self-confidence for the season ahead,” said Manfred Mölgg after the race.

Ted Ligety, meanwhile, was delighted with his win: “It's unbelievable, I didn't think it was still possible. I really gave it my all and took a lot of risks in the second run. Sölden is the first race of the season and you never know where you stand at the beginning. But I like the pressure and in the end I can always rely on being in good shape. You can’t plan for the top places, so you just have to drive well and see what happens.”

Florian Eisath from Eggental, who finished 21st after the first run, took second place in the second run. The South Tyrolean and second-best “Azzurro” in Sölden was 27 hundredths behind the meanwhile leading Slovenian Adam Zampa at the finish. With a total time of 2:40,10 minutes, Eisath ultimately took eleventh place due to the many failures. Roberto Nani finished 18th while Davide Simoncelli retired in the second race.
